Note 1 - The jury vote, given by its president Rolf Liebermann, only mentioned the winning entry, 'Refrain' by Emile Gardaz & Géo Voumard. Unofficially, though, some reports stated that West Germany's entry 'Im Wartesaal zum grossen Glück' by Walter Andreas Schwarz finished in second place and Belgium's 'Messieurs les noyés de la Seine' by Robert Montal, Jack Say, and Jean Miret in third.
Note 2 - Apart from the seven participating countries, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and Austria originally planned to take part in the contest, but withdrew for various reasons. The BBC held a selection, the two winners of which are given below as 'withdrawn entries' - although it should be pointed out that the UK final was not held until October 1956, several months after the international final in Lugano had taken place.
