BIOGRAPHY

Tarmo Leinatamm graduated from the Tallinn Music School in 1976 and from the Tallinn State Conservatoire five years later. He was the chief conductor of the Vanemuine Theatre in Tartu (1981-91), the Estonian State Opera in Tallinn (1992-94), and the Tallinn Philharmonic Orchestra (1994-2003); for five years, he was the managing director of the last-mentioned orchestra as well. In the 1990s, Leinatamm conducted many musical shows in Estonia, including West Side Story, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Kiss Me, Kate, while also being a member of various groups, such as Elektra and Harmoonikud. Since 1993, with Hannes Võrno and Peeter Oja, he has formed a trio with their own radio (and later television) stand-up comedy show, Kreisiraadio. Leinatamm was a member of the city council of Tallinn (1996-2003) and a member of the Estonian parliament (2003-07).

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST

Tarmo Leinatamm conducted the Estonian entries in two back-to-back Eurovision Song Contests: ‘Kaelakee hääl’, performed by Maarja-Liis Ilus and Ivo Linna (1996, fifth place) and ‘Keelatud maa’ for Maarja-Liis Ilus, who this time performed as a soloist under the abbreviated name Maarja (eight place). Leinatamm made a surprise return in the 2008 contest as a performer, being part of the trio Kreisiraadio which came up with the highly nonsensical ‘Leto svet’. The song failed to catch on internationally and did not manage to qualify from the semi-final.
