BIOGRAPHY

Heiki Vahar studied the violin at the Tallinn Music School and the Estonian Music Academy. He found employment at ER, the Estonian broadcaster, first as a concertmaster, later as a conductor, specializing in variety music. He worked on the Estonian version of the musical Chess and conducted one the country’s first rock operas, Soul And Passion.

Having played in several rock bands before, Vahar became the violinist in the folk ensemble Kukerpillid in 2001; with the band, he performed at the Viljandi Festival on several occasions.

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST

Heiki Vahar was involved in conducting the studio versions of the 1996 Estonian Eurovision entry ‘Kaelakee hääl’. The 1998 Eurovision Song Contest was his only appearance as a conductor in the live broadcast, leading the orchestra for the Estonian effort ‘Mere lapsed’, a gentle piano ballad performed by Koit Toome.
