MARCO FALAGIANI

BIOGRAPHY

Pianist, composer, and arranger Marco Falagiani wrote songs for Pupo and Laura Pausini and orchestrated pieces by Marco Masini and Francesca Alotta. The year 1992 was very successful for him, given that, in the San Remo Festival, his composition ‘Gli uomini non cambiano’, which was interpreted by Mia Martini, finished second, while the duet ‘Non amarmi’ (performed by Aleandro Baldi and Francesca Alotta) won the competition for debut artists in that same contest. In 1999, ‘Non amarmi’ was covered by Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony in Spanish, ‘No me ames’. 

In 1994, Falagiani again composed a song for Baldi, ‘Passerà’; with it, the blind singer won the San Remo Festival. Both ‘Non amarmi’ and ‘Passerà’ were co-written by Aleandro Baldi and Giancarlo Bigazzi, and conducted by Falagiani himself. ‘Passerà’ was later covered by Il Divo. Marco Falagiani has regularly appeared as a conductor in the San Remo Festival; in the 2007 edition of San Remo, he was again involved in a winning performance, ‘Pensa’ by Fabrizio Moro. In total, Falagiani was involved as a conductor in 13 editions of the San Remo Festival between 1991 and 2010, conducting 19 entries.

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST

After Mia Martini finished second in the 1992 San Remo Festival with 'Gli uomini non cambiano', co-composed, arranged, and conducted by Marco Falagiani, she was asked by RAI to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest of that same year, in Malmö. There, she performed the intense ballad ‘Rapsodia’ (written by Giuseppe Dati and Giancarlo Bigazzi), which finished fourth. Marco Falagiani wrote the arrangement and conducted the Eurovision orchestra for her.

HENRIK KROGSGAARD

BIOGRAPHY

Pianist, composer, and conductor Henrik Krogsgaard Jensen has been a professional musician since he was 17 years old, when he conducted the orchestra in Cirkus Schumann. He released several LPs, including ‘Henriks Dansktop favoritter’ (1972). As a vocalist, he released some duets with Grethe Sonck. In 1972, he made his TV debut, leading the orchestra in Otto Leisner’s popular TV series ‘Den gyldne pil’. With lyricist Sejr Volmer Sørensen, Krogsgaard wrote musicals and revue shows. Between 1979 and 1984, he was chief conductor of the Circusrevyen Theatre. He performed many times on national TV with the DR Radio Orchestra.

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST

Henrik Krogsgaard was the musical director of several editions of the Danish Eurovision preselection and conducted seven Danish entries in the international final between 1984 and 1992. In the 1989 contest in Lausanne, in an attractive choreography devised for the Danish entry, Krogsgaard spectacularly left his place in front of the orchestra half way through the performance of Birthe Kjær’s song ‘Vi maler byen rød’ to join the background singing group behind the soloist; the rest of the song was conducted by the musical director of that year’s contest, Benoît Kaufman. Just like the 1988 effort in which he was involved leading the orchestra, ‘Vi maler byen rød’ finished in third place.

BIOGRAPHY

Ronnie Hazlehurst did not finish secondary school and worked in a cotton factory, while earning some extra money by playing the trumpet in a jazz combo. Later, he gave up his factory job and became a freelance musician. In 1961, he was appointed staff arranger at the BBC. In 1968, he took over from Harry Rabinowitz as musical director of BBC’s Light Entertainment department. He composed and arranged the music to countless television programmes, including Are You Being Served?, Blankety Blank, Yes, Minister, and The Last Of The Summer Wine.

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST

No other British conductor took part in the Eurovision Song Contest more often than Ronnie Hazlehurst. He was musical director of three editions of the festival which were held in the UK (1974, 1977, 1982). In 1977, he conducted the entries of the UK (famously wearing a bowler hat and using a rolled-up umbrella instead of a baton) and West Germany. After that, Hazlehurst returned to the contest as the conductor of the United Kingdom entry on six more occasions (1982, 1987 to 1989, 1991, 1992). Four of Hazlehurst’s seven participations resulted in a second place on the scoreboard for the British entry. 

It should be pointed out, though, that the 1989 entry, 'Why Do I Always Get It Wrong', was performed without live orchestral accompaniment; why Hazlehurst stood up in front of the orchestra in spite of that, remains a mystery.

BIOGRAPHY

Leon Ives (pseudonym of Wolfgang Tiepold) was educated as a cellist - and in that capacity, he worked with German electronic music pioneer Klaus Schulze. Ives specialised in recording pop music with symphonic orchestra arrangements. He conducted the Munich Philharmonic for an album with ABBA repertoire and recorded ‘Sing Moody Blues’ in 2003 with Justin Hayward and the Frankfurt Rock Orchestra.

Sources around Klaus Schulze confirm that Wolfgang Tiepold must have passed away before 2020, but no further reliable information has since been found.

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 

Leon Ives arranged and conducted the 1992 Austrian entry, ‘Zusammen geh’n’, a classical Eurovision ballad, composed by Dieter Bohlen and performed by Tony Wegas. The orchestration includes an unusual yet original cello solo at the beginning of the song. Austria finished tenth in a field of 23 competing countries in that year's contest in Malmö.
