1965 NETHERLANDS EUROVISION SELECTION

Date - February 13, 1965
Official name - Nationaal Songfestival 1965
Organising broadcaster - NTS
Venue - Theater Concordia, Bussum
Host - Teddy Scholten
Director - Fred Benavente
Stage designer - Peter Zwart

Selection committee - Karel Prior / Warry van Kampen / Jos van der Valk / Willem Duys / Dick van Bommel / Joop Simons
Musical director - Dolf van der Linden

Interval act - Metropole Orchestra playing several instrumental medleys of former Eurovision entries (arr. Bert Paige)
Number of entries - 5 in final (semi-finals with total of 15 songs)
Winning entry - 'Het is genoeg' Conny van den Bos
Winning songwriters - Karel Prior "Joke van Soest" / Johnny Holshuysen
Winning orchestrator - Bert Paige

Note 1 - Via their record companies, all five participating artists had submitted three songs, with semi-finals organised between February 8-12 to determine which song each artist would sing in the final; all those heats, held at the same venue as the final with the same host, were broadcast live on television

Note 2 - As it turned out after the final, the lyricist of Conny van den Bos' winning entry - as well as one of her semi-final entries - was not Joke van Soest, but her husband Karel Prior. When it came about that Prior, who had been in the selection committee as well as being responsible for the production of the national final, was co-author of the song, a small row ensued, but ''t Is genoeg' was not disqualified as a result

Note 3 - Strikingly, the Metropole Orchestra's musical director Dolf van der Linden, who usually refrained from getting involved in writing the orchestrations to any of the entries to avoid the suspicion of partiality, is given as the arranger of Shirley Zwerus' three entries. Sheet music of two of Zwerus' three songs can be found in the national broadcaster's library in two different versions, each stemming from 1965 - with one of the two versions being signed by Van der Linden, and the other bearing no name. Most probably, Van der Linden deemed the original versions unplayable or containing too many mistakes, upon which he rewrote them for his orchestra
