Born: September 3rd, 1960

In due course, the short impression below will be replaced with a more extensive career overview

BIOGRAPHY

Jérôme Pillement, who studied with – amongst others – Leonard Bernstein as his teacher, won several prizes for orchestra conducting in the beginning of his career. Since, he has become one of France’s most sought-after conductors, especially for lyrical music. He led the orchestra for opera and operetta performances in almost all important theatres in France, but in Giessen (Germany), Tenerife (Canary Islands), and Dublin (Ireland) as well. Since 1992, he has been the musical director of Un Violin Sur Le Sable, a classical music festival annually held on the beach of Royan; moreover, he is the artistic director of an open air operetta festival in Montpellier, Les Folies d’O.

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST

Jérôme Pillement conducted the French entry to the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest in Rome, ‘C’est le dernier qui a parlé qui a raison’, sung by Amina. The first thing she did after she had sung her entry, was rushing to Pillement to give him a kiss on the cheek – possibly because the orchestra, which had made some grave mistakes while playing the Greek and Luxembourg entries earlier that evening, had been flawless in the 3 minutes before. This French entry with clear overtones of the North African musical tradition scored an equal number of points as the winner, Sweden, but had to settle for second place because of the lower number of high marks (10 and 12 points) than the Swedes.
