BIOGRAPHY

Igor Kuljerić studied orchestration at the Zagreb Conservatory, graduating in 1965; afterwards, he spent a short spell in Milan to study opera repertoire in the Scala Theatre. In 1966, he was asked to become the harpsichord player and assistant conductor of the Zagreb Soloists, with whom he made an international tour. One year later, he was appointed as a conductor at RTV Zagreb. During his career, Kuljerić conducted all major Croatian orchestras, ranging from symphony orchestra to variety ensemble.

As a composer, Kuljerić wrote chamber music, symphonic works, and pieces for solo instruments. His opera Animal Farm premiered in 2003. Besides his work as a creative artist, Kuljerić fulfilled some important functions in Croatian cultural life, including program director of the Lisinski Concert Hall, Zagreb (1980-84) and director of the Zagreb Opera (1992-94).

EUROVISION SONG CONTEST

Igor Kuljerić was the musical director of the 1990 Eurovision Song Contest, held in the Lisinski Concert Hall in Zagreb. He did not, however, conduct any entry – not even the Yugoslavian song ‘Hajde da ludujemo’, for which the orchestra was placed under the direction of Stjepan Mihaljinec. As for the rehearsals with the orchestra, Kuljerić worked merely as a supervisor, leaving the conducting to his assistant Stanko Selak, who also took over conducting the entry of Cypriot broadcaster CyBC, who came to the contest without a conductor of their own.
