BIOGRAPHY
Lefteris Chalkiadakis (Λευτέρης Χαλκιαδάκης) studied Byzantine music. In 1950, he moved to Paris, where he completed his music education, studying instrumentation under Pierre Dervaux in the Schola Cantorum and under Jean Fournet in the École Normale de Musique. For five years, he was first assistant to L. Barzin, conductor of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Paris. He performed in Paris, Marseilles, Belgium, and Israel and participated in numerous festivals, including Poyaumont, Marais, and Aix-en-Provence. After implications with his health and prompted by Barzin, Chalkiadakis decided to move to Greece (1963). He began his career as a conductor in 1964 with the Symphony Orchestra of the Municipality of Athens, which he led until 1967. Subsequently, he conducted the National Orchestra of Athens, the National Orchestra of Thessaloniki and, from 1975 to 1996, the orchestras of ERT, the national broadcaster. From 1980 until his death, he taught conducting in Athens.
EUROVISION SONG CONTEST
Lefteris Chalkiadakis once conducted a Greek entry in the Eurovision Song Contest, in 1979. Greece was represented by Elpida, who sang a piece composed and arranged by Doros Georgiádis, ‘Socrates’ (lyrics: Sotia Tsotou). The contest was held in Jerusalem that year and Greece finished eight among nineteen contestants.
