1970 NETHERLANDS EUROVISION SELECTION

Date - February 11, 1970
Official name - Nationaal Songfestival 1970
Organising broadcaster - NOS
Venue - Congresgebouw, The Hague
Host - Pim Jacobs
Director - Ruud Keers
Stage designer - Freek Biesiot
Producer - Rens van Dorth
Musical director - Dolf van der Linden
Orchestra - Metropole Orchestra (Metropole Orkest)
Concertmaster - Guus Valten
Opening sequence - "Touché" (arr. Bert Paige)
Interval act - Jerry Bergman (magician) (arr. Harry van Hoof)
Number of entries - 10 in final (semi-final with total of 30 songs)
Winning entry - 'Waterman' The Hearts of Soul
Winning songwriter - Pieter Goemans
Winning orchestrator - Herre Jager

Note 1 - Via their record companies, all ten participating artists had submitted three songs, which were presented to the selection committee on January 29 & 30 at Amersfoort's Grand Theater. Not all songs presented in this event, which was also accompanied by Dolf van der Linden's Metropole Orchestra, could be traced; all data that could be traced have been listed below

Note 2 - The Hearts of Soul's entry was given a slightly adapted vocal arrangement for the international final to suit the rules of the contest that did not allow singing groups; therefore, the sister trio was renamed Patricia & The Hearts of Soul; with Patricia Maessen doing the lead vocals, and her younger sisters Bianca and Stella backing her up

Note 3 - Below, the record version of Bonnie St. Claire's 'Als manna' is given as having been arranged and conducted by Piet Souer, but it should be noted that this studio version was not recorded and released until 1977

Note 4 - Most probably, Joke Bruys's third song in the semi-final was 'Doe 't vandaag' (lyrics: Bert Schouten / composition & arrangement: Harry van Hoof), but proof of this is lacking (cp. eliminated song 14 below)

Pieter Goemans, songwriter of 'Waterman', with The Hearts of Soul (from left to right: Patricia, Bianca, and Stella Maessen) after winning the 1970 Nationaal Songfestival
